This year’s Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year award goes to a great little club on the fringe of Barnsley town centre. The Conservative Club situated on Pitt Street offers its members a choice of two changing guest beers both always in excellent condition.
The club has been a previous pub of the season award winner in Autumn 2009 and since then has gone on from strength to strength. The Judges were extremely impressed with the beer quality and overall feel of the club.
The traditional stone fronted club is located just at the side of the Westway flyover  and is only a short walk from the town centre. This cosy club has a very friendly welcoming feel. CAMRA members are welcome and should show their card’s on entering.
This fantastic Club is down to the hard work of the steward Kevin and his wife Irene. Since taking over the club they have introduced cask ale and it has become increasingly popular. On hearing the news Kevin & Irene were overjoyed.
The clubs opening hours are: 6:30pm - midnight Monday to Thursday, Friday & Saturday 11:30am – 3:30pm & 6:30pm till midnight; the club is closed all day Sunday.
Barnsley CAMRA will be holding a presentation on Friday 15th July at around 9pm so come along and show some support for this great club. .

In a year where the headlines are filled with doom and gloom the Shaw Lane Sports Club should be looked upon as a breath of fresh air. The club has just been announced as Barnsley Camra’s Club of the year for the third consecutive year.
Loved by all real ale drinkers’ the club is a lovely setting amongst the urban sprawl. The club is run by stewardess Sharron and her band of loyal hardworking staff that together make a fantastic team. Sharron was overjoyed on hearing the news and described it as “totally unexpected!” Sharron expressed her thanks to all the staff and is very pleased with the response to the new change in cask ales.
The club now offers two permanent brews and a rotating guest. The two permanent beers are Acorn Barnsley Bitter and a changing Theakstons brew. The guest ale is sourced from local and national microbreweries.
The club is always a hive of activity and is now a regular venue for Barnsley Camra beer festivals the next being held over the August bank holiday weekend.
To celebrate this fantastic achievement Barnsley Camra held a presentation evening on Friday 25th June, well done to everyone at The Shaw Lane Sports Club.

This year’s Barnsley CAMRA club of the year 2009 award goes to Shaw Lane Sports Club. This is the second consecutive year the club has won the accolade.
The club has gained a great reputation with CAMRA members for good quality real ale. On hearing the news club manage Sharron was overjoyed.” Once again it’s fantastic news! I’d like to say a big thanks to all the customers for their support and to the staff who without their hard work this wouldn’t have been possible. We changed things around this year with the permanent beers being Black Sheep Bitter and
Acorn Barnsley Bitter. We’ve also just introduced a changing guest beer normal from local breweries. This has become extremely popular with the regulars and often runs out very quickly. In May they were selling a mild to support CAMRA’s mild campaign.”
Pubs officer Phil Gregg said, “once again Sharron and the staff have pulled it out of the bag, it’s testimony to all their hard work. This year we saw more clubs than normal, but the Shaw Lane again came out on top, well done!”
Close to the centre of town the club is a fantastic facility catering for sports such as cricket, football and rugby plus many others Barnsley CAMRA will be holding a presentation night on Friday June 26th at around 9pm. So come along and show your recognition to this fantastic club.
Runners up this year were the Royal British Legion Club in Penistone & Darfield Cricket Club, well done to both and keep up the excellent work.

CLUB OF THE YEAR 2007
DARFIELD CRICKET CLUB

Click Image for Larger Picture. This picture shows a Presentation for Cub of the Year

This year for the third year running the Barnsley CAMRA’s club of the year goes to Darfield Cricket Club. The judges were impressed with the quality of the two weekly changing guest beers, value for money, good clientele mix and sympathy with CAMRA aims.
2007 is a big year for the club, which is celebrating its 150 year anniversary. The club has some big events planned throughout the year such as numerous guest matches including the likes of the Yorkshire County Cricket Academy Team and the old DCC 1985 team against a guest Yorkshire 1985 team.
The club has gone through some major changes over the last twelve months the main one being a change in steward. Previous award winner Frank Hoyland has moved on to pastures new taking on the stewardship at Hickleton Village Hall. Despite this the committee were determined to continue the clubs reputation for first class quality real ale.
The club appointed a new steward Glyn Noble who started in November and took to the job with great enthusiasm. Over the winter and due to the seasonal drop in sales the club decided to reduce the number of real ales from four to two. The result is improved beer quality and an ever-changing range with beers changing within a week. The beers on offer are mainly from local micros such as Acorn and Wentworth and Glyn is only too happy to listen to customer recommendations. Good value food is available at weekends.
On receiving news of the award Glyn said, "That’s fantastic news it’s made my day. It makes it all worthwhile. I’d like to thank the members of the club as well as Barnsley CAMRA for their support and I’ll be trying my best to win National Club of the Year 2008!"
Pubs officer Phil Gregg said, "This year the competition was stronger than ever with all clubs achieving high scores in beer quality, but there can only be one winner and yet again Darfield Cricket Club came out on top, three years on the trot! Awards seem to be becoming a bit of a habit."
Barnsley CAMRA made the presentation to the club on the evening of Wednesday 11th July, just before the quiz. Please call in and show your support to all the staff and committee of the club.

CLUB OF THE YEAR 2006
DARFIELD CRICKET CLUB

Click Image for Larger Picture. This picture shows a Presentation for Cub of the Year

It's no supprise that the Yorkshire Regional Club of the Year 2005 has gone on to win Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year again.
Judges for Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year have again been impressed with Darfield Cricket Clubs range and quality of the real ales on offer that it has been voted the winner for the 2006 competition.
Again this is all down to the care and attention of club steward Frank Hoyland and wife Sharon who have been steward and stewardess here for 4 years.
The club has always served real ale in its 28-year history, however, 2 years ago, with backing from the committee, Frank increased the real ale choice to the members. Now the club has a rotating choice of 4 real ales (one more than last year) on offer and has offered well over 150 real ales in the last year all in oversized lined glasses. Membership in the last year has also slowly increased, as has the trade. Frank is insistent that the real ales are the biggest reason for this, "The members here have always enjoyed the real ales on offer and the new members and their guests are drinking the real ales too. We sell smooth and lager just like everyone else but you will always find someone in the club talking about the real ales, you don't get that with the keg stuff. The away cricket teams love coming here too, not sure if it's for the match or the real ales though."
Throughout May one of the hand pumps had a rotating mild. This offered, amongst others, Acorn Darkness 4.2%, Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild 6% and Clarks Black Gold 4%. The club also offers food. Sharon spends most of the day in the kitchen on Saturdays and Sundays as well as Bank Holidays preparing hot and cold meals. Sunday lunch here is very popular.
Barnsley CAMRA branch secretary, Nigel Croft said, "This is great news for the club, winning the award a second time just proves what a wonderful place the club is to socialise and try excellent real ales."
Frank Hoyland said, "Having just received the Pub of the Season for Spring and now winning Club of the Year again it's just great and it is all thanks to the members who are drinking and enjoying the real ales. They are demanding the best and I think we are serving it to them!"
Presentation for Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year was made on Wednesday 5th July. Call in and show your support.

Click Image for Larger Picture. This picture shows a Presentation for Cub of the Year

Judges for Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year were so impressed with the range and quality of the real ales on offer at Darfield Cricket Club that it's the winner for 2005.
This is all down to the interest and careful nurturing of club steward Frank Hoyland and wife Sharon who have been steward and stewardess here for 3 years.
The club has always served real ale in its 27-year history but only dabbled with guest beers in the past. However, 12 months ago, with backing from the committee, Frank increased the real ale choice to the members. Now the club has a rotating choice of 3 real ales on offer and has offered well over 150 real ales in the last year.
Membership in the last year has increased, as has the trade. Frank mentioned that the real ales are to blame, "we sell just as much smooth and lager as we have always done. It seems the new members and their guests are drinking the real ales. The away cricket teams love coming here too, not sure if it's for the match or the real ales."
Throughout May one of the hand pumps had a rotating mild. This offered, amongst others, Acorn Darkness 4.2%, Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild 6% and Clarks Black Gold 4%. The club also offers food, this is available all day Saturdays and Sundays as well as Bank Holidays. Sunday lunch here is very popular.
Barnsley CAMRA branch secretary, Nigel Croft said, "This is great news for the club, it's a wonderful place to socialise and try quality real ales. Barnsley CAMRA congratulate steward Frank Hoyland and his team for winning our Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year award, and I look forward to the presentation evening on Wednesday 22nd June".
Frank Hoyland said, "It is great to be recognised by CAMRA, but it is all thanks to the members who are drinking and enjoying the real ales. They are now keeping me on my toes and only demand the best!"
Presentation for Barnsley CAMRA Club of the Year was made on Wednesday 22nd June.

This new clubhouse was opened in August 2000. The club is located on the edge of Barnsley known as Shaw Lands, the extensive grounds have rugby pitches as well as a cricket ground. Inside, the clubhouse is smart, clean and modern with an attractive lounge. The bar is small and the handpumps can be found in the far room or function room.
