News from Penistone thanks to Colin Wilson: Had a couple of beers in the Wentworth last night. Banks OK, Ringwood Summer beer better, Burtonwood Top Hat (4.8% ABV) absolutely superb. There is life beyond Jaipur. Excellent curry at the Cinnamon spice on Market St too - interesting choice of fish curries for something a bit different.

Planning has been resubmitted to build houses on the site of the former cutting edge public house. As the new plans do not include a new public house Camrea will be opposing the plans so watch thus space and local media for updates. Admin reply: following an interview on dearne fm see the below article from dearne fm's website: A man is fighting a planning application because he says it means Worsbrough won't have a local pub. Phil Gregg, from the local Campaign for Real Ale, is concerned the tradition of nipping out for a quick pint will be lost. The old Cutting Edge public house was demolished and now a planning application for 14 homes has been submitted. Mr Gregg thinks the lack of a pub could hit the local community. Site manager, Daniel Firth, from Keptcastle Limited, has told Dearne FM they are a local developer who brought the site with a derelict pub on it and are now interested in improving the area

Planning permission has again been sought to build 13 houses on thge site of the Countryman public house at Wombwell. Barnsley Camra objected against the original application which was approved. We will again be opposing this application in writing to Barnsley Council.Updates will follow Admin reply: Objection letter: Dear Sirs, I am writing to you objecting on to the application to build 13 new dwellings on the site of the Countryman public house in Wombwell. We are aware of a previous application submitted last year which we also objected to have itemised our reasons for objection below. As the Pubs and clubs officer for the Barnsley branch of the campaign for real ale I am horrified at the prospect of another pub being lost in the area to make way for housing. The pub is only one within a short walking distance for the local residents and a valuable community asset and meeting place for local residents. The pub like alot of other pubs in the area was built in the 1960’s and occupied a large site area. Over recent years the Barnsley area has seen a wealth of pubs all demolished and replaced with new housing. The pubs however were never replaced and the community resource was therefore lost forever. The Wombwell are like nationally has seen many pubs closed over recent times. Many of these pubs are part of our country’s heritage are once gone are lost forever. The area of Wombwell in the last twelve months had lost The Low Valley Arms, The Perrywinkle and the White Rose. All these sites are still un developed as is the former site of The Perfecta bedding factory. Surely it would make much more sense and create less of an eyesore to ensure these sites are developed first rather than lose a local asset. When we originally objected to the housing plans we were contacted by members of the local community angry and upset about the potential loss of their local pub. There were also articles in the local press after being contacted by residents. Since the initial application local MP John Healey has unveiled a draft of measures to help support our pubs. The sustainable communities act was launched to protect community resources such as Shops, Post offices & Public Houses however Barnsley Council seem unwilling to adopt the measures laid out in the act. I would personally much rather see a smaller more traditional Public House constructed in keeping with the local architecture and then a smaller number of houses to help with the shortage of housing in the area. This would give the local community a new resource whilst also attracting visitors and commerce to the area. The site has ample space to accommodate a new public house without being a nuisance to the local residents. Nearby Rotherham Council have adopted a similar scheme with the development of the former Manvers site with mixed use residential and commercial properties being constructed one of which included a Public House. Over recent years public houses within the Barnsley area seem to have become easy pickings for housing developers. None of the sites have been used for other types of use other than housing. A number of these pubs have been demolished due to arson attacks once closed such as the Wooley at Wooley, The Crown Inn Great Houghton, The Station Inn Thurnscoe, The Whinwood Thurnscoe and many more. If the local planning panels insisted that such community amenities should be replaced I’m sure we would see a reduction in this terrible arson With the current shortage of housing in the area I feel local pubs have become easy pickings for developers as a derelict or demolished pub site is seen as an eyesore. The traditional British pub is part of our country’s heritage and sadly too many in the Barnsley area seem to have been lost over recent years. Nationally the pub trade is struggling due to the economic climate and the greed of the pub companies placing restrictions and high rental rates on the publicans. I would like to see Barnsley Council offer support to encourage local pubs rather than just town centre bars which appeal to a smaller clientele and do not support the community. Yours truly, Phil Gregg Pubs Officer Barnsley Camra

Planning permission has been submitted to demolish The Dearne Hotel at Bolton on Dearne & construct a nursing home. The pub has been closed for some time following a drugs raid by police. Admin reply: from the south yorkshire times: A BOLTON pub which was shut down by police after a drugs raid could now be turned into a care home. The Dearne Hotel, on St Andrews Square, was closed in March last year after police discovered as much as £50,000-worth of Class-A drugs during a raid four months earlier. Now Leeds-based care firm LNT Group have stepped in and submitted a planning application to Barnsley Council to build a 48-bed residential care home. A Barnsley Council spokesman said a decision would likely be made on the application by the end of June

From The South Yorkshire Times:
A group of drinkers spent an evening OUTSIDE a pub to avoid the cigarette smoke when a discarded cig-end set the cellar on fire.
Some 15 drinkers had to be evacuated from the Ring O'Bells in Royston Road, Royston, when a stray lit cigarette * * * led to flames in the barrel room.
Fire crews raced to the pub at 10.20pm and donned breathing apparatus to fight the blaze.
They spent 30 minutes at the scene, putting the fire out using hosereel jets.
A fire brigade spokesman told the Times it was believed the fire had started accidentally.
